Training Diary 2-8th Sept 2013

Monday September 02nd. HRV= 71 White.

MondayA better than expected result and will try make the most of it.  Lunchtime run at a forced easy pace due to heavy legs but hopefully it’ll set me up for something later.  Busier than expected after work but made the most of a small window of opportunity and settled for a session of Hill Reps.  In my head I was thinking 10 but it was more of an effort than I expected and by halfway I could feel fatigue that was effecting my form and core strength.  Tried a 6th with a scaled back effort and on the 7th I knew that it might not be safe to continue as i felt the weakness in my core may have meant needing a toilet.  Made my way home and managed an extra hill on the way.
Plan for tomorrow is an early gym session

Tuesday September 03rd. HRV= 83 Red.

TuesdayUnexpected Red and I’m wondering is it because of an enhanced Recovery?  Will skip the lunchtime run and retest this evening before deciding if it’s a run or rest day.  Easy Gym session of mostly mobility work and a reintroduction to the Back Squat with a 50% reduction in weight.  Can feel some discomfort behind both knees and will ice the area later.  I’d be more concerned if it was just behind the one as this is more than likely training related overuse.  Stress / Rest / Adapt.  Retested after getting home and HRV had dropped to 74 which helped the decision making.  Hit the road for what was now a recovery run with my legs feeling tired but I soon started to loosen up and the pace increased as the run progressed.  Finished with 10K in just under 45 minutes.
Plan for tomorrow is an evening Steady Track Session with even pace and maybe an earlier Recovery Run.

Wednesday September 04th. HRV=71 White.

WednesdayA great result and as I suspected with yesterday’s result it has since turned to Green as you’ll see from the daily indicator line.  Will stick with today’s plan and try make it through the weekend to make the most of my limited time before the next race but I can feel the fatigue building up in my legs although this is how you should feel during times of hard training.  Might take Friday off work to fit in an unpressurised long run.  Got an offer of a lunchtime run that I couldn’t refuse but probably should have and finished with 11K in under 47 minutes.  I’ll know later if this was a good idea.  Arrived at the Track and unsure of what I could do but rather than think about it I just let it happen.  Similar to last week but rather than a long warm up we went straight into a slower but more even paced run for the full session.  The change of pace resulted in one of the lads just missing his 10k race personal best by less than 30 seconds and this is a good sign that his training is getting the results.  Finished the evening with my usual coaching duties and today it was a series of 1 mile Time Trials followed by a short Fartlek session and a stretch & mobility cool down.  Double serving of Cherryactive before bed
Plan for tomorrow is an early gym session, coaching after work and then a yet to be decided run.

Thursday September 05th. HRV=74 White.

ThursdayA great result and feeling better than I did on this day last week even though my training has been continuous and intense.  It’s all about the timing of when you do what and ensuring that you recover and adapt before moving on.   Early Gym session with a slight increase on last week including a set of 3*3 Deadlifts @ 90Kg (+10Kg) plus Dumbell Snatch (12.5Kg) and Kettle bell Swings.  Depending on how I feel during the day I’d like to think I can manage an interval session this evening but I won’t do anything that might lessen the possible Training Effect from tomorrow’s run.
Met with Martin for a repeat of last week’s session of 3*1K off 2 minute recovery with the intention of running 3:40 per K but all ended up closer to 3:30 pace.  A good session with a total distance of 6K and hopefully that’s just enough rather than too much.
Plan for tomorrow is a day off work to make time for a long Trail Run focussing on distance or climbing depending on how I feel.

Friday September 06th. HRV= 90 Amber.

FridayA good score and yet again I reckon the Amber is down to my enhanced recovery.  Dropped the kids to school and then it was off to the hills.  Went to a familiar area but with no particular plan except to climb as much as possible and with that in mind I purposely took a few wrong turns to explore new routes.  In my mind I was hoping to do 5-6 hrs but 2 near falls told me it was time to call it a day and I settled for 30K with 1000M of climbing.
Plan for tomorrow will include a trip to the hills or maybe 2..

Saturday September 07th. HRV= 79 White.

SaturdaySlept it out having set my weekday rather than weekend alarm and didn’t have time to for a hill run.  Feeling good and with a higher than expected result I went to the Track to make the most of my available time.  Would have preferred the hills but motivated by knowing I was in shape made the Track session easier and knocked out a 10K in 37:30 after warm up and with cool down.  Went home for breakfast, dropped my daughter to training and then I went for a short hill run concentrating on leg strength.  Didn’t feel the effects of the earlier session so all is good.  Picked up my daughter with 15 minutes to spare and then it was off to a match.
Plan for tomorrow is a medium distance Trail / Hill run concentrating on climbing.

Sunday September 08th. HRV= 82 White.

SundayYet another good result but I’m stuck for time as my son was asked to play a match at short notice so yet again to make the most of my limited time I head to the Track after dropping my son to the match.  Luckily the Track and pitch are close together and I manage to knock out an almost identical session to yesterday but with a little bit more and make it back to the match missing less than 15 minutes of play.
Plan for tomorrow will depend on recovery.

Weekly Summary:

WeeklyA great week but yet again would have preferred more time in the hills.  Showing good signs of improved fitness and might ease back on the faster sessions next week and use the Parkrun as a time trial to see where I’m at…

Training Diary 19th-25th Aug

Monday August 19th. HRV= Forgot to pack ithlete.

Still feeling the after effects of the wedding and lazy about doing anything.  Settled for same as yesterday with an out and back on the flat but went a little bit further for 8K.  Still in Kerry.
Plan for tomorrow includes a 4hr Drive home.

Tuesday August 20th. HRV= Forgot to pack ithlete.

Woke early but not on form and was looking for excuses not to run and then it was too late to do anything.  Long drive home and I’ve an Ultra Running meeting in the evening with limited time between my arrival home and departure again which helped focus on training.  Got ready for the meeting and went via the Track for a quick session of 3*2K off 20 seconds recovery for a total distance of 10K.
Plan for tomorrow is a Steady Track Session with even pace..

Wednesday August 21st. HRV=58 Amber.

WedsLower than I’d expected but then again yesterday was far from ideal with a long drive and a rushed session before going to a meeting and I’m only now realising that I missed my dinner and snacked instead.  An almost repeat of this day last week but the group has grown to 5 as word of mouth is increasing the interest.  Started with a 2k warm up at a slightly faster than usual pace caused by the chatting and not concentrating on the session and then kicked off the middle 10K and found ourselves having to always slow it down rather than speed up.  Completed the 10K in 38:50 which was 1 minute faster than last week and ended the session with a 2k cool down and a walking lap.  Finished the evening with a coaching session and a chance to do some running drills and a reminder that I need to do more.
Plan for tomorrow is a running commute and coaching after work.

Thursday August 22nd. HRV=57 Red.

ThursUnexpected low and it’s back to bed.  Might chance something short and fast on the Track after coaching as I find  the short fast work usually fatigues my legs before i get a chance to put my heart under too much stress.  This is partly down to my ratio of slow twitch to fast twitch muscle fibers.  Got a bit lazy as the day went on and felt like going home after coaching but a few others turned up for the session and we settled for 4*1K @ 3:30K off 2 minutes recovery.
Plan for tomorrow will depend on how I feel.

Friday August 23rd. HRV= 56 Red.

FriProbably should rest today but feeling ok and thinking this could be still the after effects of the weekend.  Rested for most of the day and retested with a better result.  Went for an evening session on the Track with the intention running at a zone in and around 85% of my HR max for up to 50 minutes but struggled to get into it and cut the session short.
Plan for tomorrow will include a trip to the hills with my next race in mind.  Unsure about Parkrun.

Saturday August 24th. HRV= 65 White.

SatA good result and can feel yesterday’s session in my legs so that makes the Parkrun decision of not running.  Dropped my daughter off at her training and went to the hills for a short but intense session on tired legs.  Climbed strong and made sure not to stop at any stage and gave the quads a good hammering on the descent.  Tomorrow should be interesting as the cumulative fatigue is setting into the legs.
Plan for tomorrow is a medium distance long run of 30K

Sunday August 25th. HRV= 54 Amber.

SunLower than I’d like but feeling good and I’m putting my recent low scores down to the fact that I’ve missed a few recordings after forgetting to pack ithlete for my trip to Kerry last weekend and it’s resetting a new baseline.  Today is a group run so I stuck with the plan but might have erred on the side of caution if it was a solo effort.  Met with Aidan & Liam and off we went for a 30K distance over rolling roads aiming for 4:30 per K (7:15 mile).  The pace was conversational and we were always falling into a faster rather than slower trot so the effort was to slow down rather than speed up which made it an enjoyable morning.  Finished just slightly ahead of schedule after running a 4:25K (7:07 Mile), almost perfect
Plan for tomorrow is undecided and time dependent.

Weekly Summary:

IMG_4933Low volume but happy with the intensity and finished with a decent distance session although I’m a little bit concerned about my climbing time with the Mountain Ultra so close.

Training Diary Monday 04th-Sunday 10th March 2013

Monday Mar 04th. HRV= 56 Amber.

Mon 4th HRVAn expected result but didn’t expect it to be so low as I didn’t think I worked hard enough yesterday and I’m now glad I didn’t do a second session. Will skip the lunchtime session to make the most of this evening.  Met with some club mates and did an easy session of hill repeats totalling 11K in an hour and alternating between a short sharp hill and a longer gradual climb.
Plan for tomorrow is an early gym session and a lunchtime MAF session if I feel up to it.

Tuesday Mar 05th. HRV=79 Green.

Tues 5th HRVA great result and I’m back in the game.  Early gym session of Back Squat, 5* 5 with 45Kg working on depth and technique. Walking Lunges * 3 sets with 10Kg Dumbbells and 3*3 Deadlift with 95Kg, 100Kg, 105Kg.  Still lifting less than before but I’m feeling more confident in the movement and can feel the strength returning.  Lunchtime recovery run and could feel the cumulative fatigue in my legs and it was too much of an effort to elevate my heart rate so I dropped it down a gear.   Evening Recovery run over an undulating course keeping the HR low.
Plan for tomorrow is an easy Lunchtime Run and an evening Interval Session similar to last week.

Wednesday Mar 06th. HRV=67 White.

Weds 6th HRVSame as last week and woke with the DOMS and remembering how I felt last week after consulting my diary I think I’ll skip the lunchtime run and be even better prepared for this evening’s session with the intention of working harder.  Evening Interval session was almost abandoned for something easier as I struggled to get my legs moving.  For the past few weeks I’ve ran this with 2 club mates but tonight it was just 1 and we were both feeling the effects of the last few days.  The plan was 7* 1K @ 3:30 per k with 55 seconds recovery which is a rep more than last week with 5 seconds less recovery.  We finished the 1st rep in 3:40 after picking up the pace towards the effort felt closer to 3:20 pace and we both knew that that this was unsustainable.  The 2nd rep felt a little bit easier but still an effort and then Liam arrived looking fresh as a daisy so we got him to lead out the next 5 reps and we were then able to switch off and just follow.  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/281200486
Plan for tomorrow will depend on my recovery but includes an early Gym session.

Thursday Mar 07th. HRV= 70 White.

Thurs 7th HRVA great result after last night’s effort but still feeling the training effect and I’m carrying some fatigue.  Early Gym session and my Trainer changed the routine to allow recover from Tuesday’s session.  Bench Press working up to a 1 rep max of 60Kg, 5* 5 Push Press with 32.5Kg and finishing with a Core / Abdominal Routine.  Felt good during the session but was glad when it finished.
Plan for tomorrow is Hill Reps or MAF session.

Friday Mar 08th. HRV=67 White.

Fri 8th HRVLower than expected but I am feeling a bit fatigued and it’s possible that the last few days have caught up on me and that changes today, will skip my lunchtime run and save myself for an easy running commute home.  Plan changed again and the run home is cancelled so I went for a Recovery run at lunchtime.  Keeping my HR nice and low and it wasn’t long before my legs came back to life.  Ran slightly longer than planned as the pace allowed more for my available time and was quite happy with the result.  Shortly after finishing my legs started to stiffen up again.  A window of opportunity allowed for a sneaky evening Track session and went for a 3* 2K Intervals off 2 min Recovery.  Tough session but worth the effort and finished it off with a trip to the supermarket.
Plan for tomorrow is undecided and will depend on available time and recovery.

Saturday Mar 09th. HRV= 80 White.

Sat 9th HRVGreat result but legs feeling stiff so the plan now is to train my engine with a steady state run before breakfast and train my chasis with a short fast Trail Run in the afternoon.  I’d have secretly preferred a lower score that would have allowed going back to bed but I knew that if I went back to bed without a good enough reason I wouldn’t have gone back to sleep.  The softest pillow is a clear conscience.  Took a few minutes to warm into my first session and eased into a comfortable pace covering 10K in just over 40 minutes.  Dropped my daughter to her afternoon training session and continued on to my now regular hill run.  Started off at a steady effort with the gradient dictating the pace.  Visibility was poor and this made the session a little bit easier as I couldn’t see too far ahead and even though I’m familiar with the route it can be easy to trick the mind when you can’t see what’s ahead.  Legs were feeling strong and I was all set for emptying the tank on the final climb to the summit but hooked up with another runner that seemed to be struggling and walking.  We ran together at an easier pace and said our goodbyes when the climbing finished and then I met one of my Team Mates 'Eoin Keith' and had a 5 minute stop and chat.  I was now under pressure to get back to the car and picked up the pace on the descent running quite hard and could really feel the effort I’d put in as I approached the finish.  All in all a good day’s work.
Plan for tomorrow is a Trail run along the Wicklow Way with an early start.

Sunday Mar 10th. HRV=86 White.

Sun 10th HRVExpected a low score and sore legs but all is good and looking forward to a good day.  Woke at 7am and had a Beet it Shot before getting out of bed, followed this with my HRV measuring routine and then a cup of coffee before leaving the house at 8am.  Drove to a location that would allow maximum climbing for the least possible distance / time.  The weather was quite cold and I expected it to get colder so I dressed a bit better than usual and carried a small pack.  Based on my HRV my ever changing plan was to run at a HR just above my Aerobic Zone to get the most from what could be my last chance to run in the hills before the Wicklow Way Ultra.  The plan soon changed after the running started as I struggled to get my legs moving.  I expected to finish the day with an average pace of faster than 5:30 per K but had to settle for almost a minute slower.  An ok run on tired legs.
Plan for tomorrow is a set of hill reps as a single session.

Training Diary 29th Jan – 3rd Feb 2013.

Monday 28th  Jan. HRV= 73 White.

Mon HRVA good start to the week and all going well I should be back on track by the weekend.  Easy lunchtime run made harder because of the weather and a gale force wind.  Almost forced to turn back after 3K thinking it might be dangerous to continue but then I found shelter and it was manageable for the most part.  Pace was slow but maintained the planned HR for 10K.  Finished the day with a 9k recovery run over an undulating local route.
Plan for tomorrow is an early strength session followed by a lunchtime recovery run and a second evening run while my son is training.

Tuesday 29th Jan. HRV= 73 White.

Tues HRVA good result after what seemed like a tough day yesterday and my HR is 4 beats lower.  Early morning strength session of squats with a step back in lifted weight (-15Kg) but an increase in depth similar to last week and -15Kg step back for my Deadlift.  This change of plan is based on my personal trainer knowing what I’ve been doing and the effects a week off can have.  It’s called taking a step back before going forward because you lift with your muscles and not your ego.  Similar lunchtime run to yesterday in similar conditions except the wind wasn’t as strong.  Football training cancelled due to bad weather and that means my run is also cancelled and I’m now glad I made the effort to run earlier.
Plan for tomorrow is a lunchtime and after work MAF 10K and then a Team meeting before heading home for a coaching session.

Wednesday 30th  Jan. HRV=63  White.

Weds HRVUnexpected low result and maybe the strength session was a bit more stressful than I thought.  I’ll pay a bit more attention to my recovery today.  Lunchtime MAF 10K on yet another blustery day with almost similar results.
Team meeting after work and got some bad news regarding the Black Ice Race with recent rumours being confirmed as true and the race is cancelled.  Wasn’t in form for coaching so I went home.
Circumstances change but the training continues.
Provisional plan for tomorrow is a lunchtime MAF 10K but will rest if my HRV is lower than today.  Coaching in the evening and doing pick up from soccer.

Thursday 31st  Jan. HRV=73 White.

Thurs HRVA big improvement on yesterday.  Lunchtime run went wrong and couldn’t really concentrate on what I was doing as my mind was in overdrive trying to decide what to do next with regards my training.  There’s a 50K race on in just over 2 weeks time and I was provisionally on the start list but hadn’t committed to running it but now I think I will even though I feel less than prepared.  Soccer training was cancelled due to bad weather so I used the opportunity to fit in a second easy run of 12K after Athletics.  Recovery less than ideal which included 2 bottles of beer.  Expecting low score tomorrow but it’ll be partly drink related.
Plan for tomorrow is an early strength session followed by a lunchtime recovery run and if I have time for a second run I’ll take it.

 Friday 01st Feb. HRV=63 White.

Fri HRVAs expected but secretly hoping for higher.  Easy session in the gym of all upper body work finishing with a 1k time trial on the rower.  Lunchtime 10K MAF session and felt good even though the time to complete as slow.
Plan for tomorrow is an early 20K Trail Run and I’m out tomorrow night.

Saturday 02nd Feb. HRV=76 Green.

Sat HRVA great result and means I can push hard today.  Very cold start and took a while to warm up.  The run started with a 6K uphill and I felt like my legs were lacking the climbing strength needed to get the most from today.  Recovered quickly on the descents and finished wishing I’d ran harder.  Maybe I need a race?
Out tonight and won’t make any plans for tomorrow just yet as it might be best to wake without the alarm.

Sunday 03rd Feb. HRV= 76 White.

sun HRVLate night that included a takeaway so I thought it best not to upset myself by waking early with an alarm to see a low score and maybe end up back in bed. Woke feeling ok and the resulting score shows I probably made a wise decision.  Too late for a decent run so I made the most of a short window of opportunity and did a 5K recovery run.  Went out again later with the intention of doing a 50 minute Steady State Run of 145-155 bpm on the track after a warm up running to the track and maybe extend the cool down by taking a longer route home.  Took a bit of effort getting into the zone as my legs were tired from yesterday but then it started to feel ok and thats probably because my HR was staying elevated from fatigue rather than pace.  Thinking on my feet I thought I’d push hard for the last 10 minutes and try staying at the upper end of the zone and instead of hitting the light button I hit lap and that messed up my programmed session 15 minutes early.  Wasn’t switched mentally to just keep running so I started my cool down early.
Plan for tomorrow will depend on HRV but I’m hoping to do 2 sessions.

Weekly HRV Summary

Weeks HRV
A mixed week of mostly aerobic running with a hill and steady state session.  Getting the bad news about the Black Ice Race being cancelled means my plans need to change and I’ve now to decide and prioritise on what to do over the coming months.
